History of Sardis
(Man) The Greek historian and father of history, Herodotus, notes that the city was founded by the son of Hercules, the Heraclides.
(Movement) During the 8th Century BC, Sardis was the capital of the Lydian kingdom which was very advanced in the industrial arts and Sardis was the chief seat of its manufactures. The most important of these trades was the making and dyeing of delicate woolen stuffs and carpets.
(Machine) The stream Pactolus which flowed through the market-place "carried golden sands” which was in reality gold dust out of Mount Tmolus. It was during the reign of King Croesus that the metallurgists of Sardis discovered the secret of separating gold from silver, thereby producing both metals of a purity never known before.
• Sardis conquered several times from 7th Century until the rise of the Roman Empire
(Monument) A disastrous earthquake hit the city in about 17 AD which left the city in ruins until it was rebuilt by Tiberius Caesar and there were statues in his honor by the time of Revelation.

National Level

Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.

• The first president of Princeton University, the Rev. Jonathan Dickinson, stated: “Cursed be all that learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.”
